Bird Hike at Griffy Lake

  • 3400 N Headley Rd Bloomington, IN, 47408 United States (map)

Meet at 7:30 AM at the end of the parking lot (past the boat rental) at Griffy Lake Nature Presenve.

Easy 1 1/2 hour walk out and back on mostly level woodland trail overlooking the lake and following Griffy Creek upstream, then return to parking lot. For Baltimore Orioles, swallows flying over the lake, herons, vireos, warblers, Wood Thrush serenades, Bald Eagle possible. Trail could be muddy if recent rains, making boots a good idea, and insect repellant is recommended regardless, especially around legs and ankles. If weather is inclement, check website to see if the trip is called off or re-scheduled for a later date.

Directions: From I-69 north, take state routes 45 and 46 ("the Bypass") east, after traffic lights for College/Walnut St, and for Dunn St, next light after Dunn will be the trafic light for Fee Ln on the south (right) side and E Matlock Rd on the north (left) side. Go left (north) on E Matlock, which will swing sharply right, then sharp left onto N Headley Rd.
Continue through communities and more sharp turns on Headley, and downhill into wooded valley. At the bottom, cross the bridge (watch for Canada Goose pair which might be in the middle of the road there), and then right (east) into Griffy Lake Boat Rental, continue to parking at the end to meet the group at 7:30 a.m.
