Osprey Nesting Tower

In fall 2020, SAS partnered with Indiana DNR and Duke Energy to install a new osprey nesting platform at Monroe Lake, Fairfax SRA, Bay View Shelter area.

This project was initiated by DNR with the goal of replacing a utility pole platform that had been installed years ago on the peninsula adjacent to Fairfax beach. Osprey had periodically attempted to nest in the old location but were always pressured off by the public.

In spring 2020 season, osprey nested successfully at the new platform due to the new location, high lake levels through most of the season, and a concerted effort by DNR and SAS volunteers to monitor the nest site (during COVID) and ask visitors to keep their distance. This new platform provides a wonderful opportunity for visitors to view the osprey with minimal risk of disturbing the birds.
